India should initiate a ceasfire in Kashmir

Jan 14, 2007:

Chairman of the moderate faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today called upon New Delhi to initiate an internal ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir and promised that APHC would impress the militant leadership to reciprocate the move.

Mirwaiz who is on a visit to Jammu prior to APHC's Pakistan trip told mediapersons today that New Delhi, being the bigger party, should initiate the ceasefire.

"All Parties Hurriyat Conference would compliment this move of India." he said.

Since his arrival in Jammu on Saturday Mirwaiz held discussion with various Jammu based political parties, displaced Kashmiri Hindu organisations, trader community and intellectuals.

is trying to generate consensus for a united Kashmir voice," Mirwaiz said.

The Hurriyat chairman also urged New Delhi to come up with its roadmap on Kashmir.

"We would welcome the proposals from New Delhi on the resolution of the long-standing dispute of Kashmir," he added.

Mirwaiz said that he has thoroughly studied the Irish Peace Process model and called upon New Delhi to have a political will exhibited by the United Kingdom in resolving the conflict in Northern Ireland.

"For the last eight years, not a single bullet has been fired in Northern Ireland," he added crediting the England Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Labour Party for giving up the traditional stand of England on the issue.

Commenting on opposition from the rival faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani Mirwaiz said, "Geelani Sahab is caught up in history.

"Post 9/11 the global order is changing and new structures are emerging." On the role of United Nations for failing to resolve the Kashmir issue, Mirwaiz said, "UN has failed Iraq, Afghanistan as well as Kashmir."

On Saturday Geelani came out strongly against the moderate faction of APHC and called for a Shutdown strike on Jan 17 against their probable talks with New Delhi and their proposed visit to Islamabad.

Geelani told reporters in Srinagar that the moderate Hurriyat Conference was 'creating confusion among people'.

"Their (moderates) activities are aimed only at maintaining the status quo in Kashmir," Geelani said.

"On Jan 17 when they will be talking to New Delhi, a strike will be observed to make it clear that nothing short of freedom was acceptable in lieu of people's sacrifices," He added.
