Eight killed in Kashmir border gunfight

Srinagar, June 29, 2010:

Five suspected guerrillas and three Indian army men were killed in a gunfight near the line-of-control (LoC) in Indian-controlled Kashmir, Indian defence officials said Tuesday.

The line of control divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

The gunfight broke out Sunday night in frontier Kupwara district, around 150- km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir.

Col. Vineet Sood, a defence spokesman based in Srinagar said that five guerrillas have been in the gunfight.

“The operation is underway. The gunfight erupted after our alert troops in area observed suspicious movement Sunday. The troopers asked the intruders to surrender but they defied the warnings and fired on the troopers. In the exchange we have also lost three troopers,” Sood said.

Clashes between militants and Indian troopers are frequent in Indian administered Kashmir.

Indian troops fight a guerrilla war in the Muslim dominated region for the past two decades.
