Kashmir separatist threatens fast unto death

Feb 03, 2007:

Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Mohammed Yasin Malik has threatened to go on fast unto death if the Human Rights violations are not stopped in Indian administered Kashmir.

While addressing a hurriedly convened press conference in capital city Srinagar, Malik said that despite entering into the third year of peace process, the human rights violations and atrocities committed by Indian security agencies are nowhere seen to be ending.

Citing the recent revelation of the spate of fake encounters in which number of civilians were labeled as militants and then killed in theatrical gun battles, Malik said that such things are increasing with every passing day.

“It is because of the prevailing situation that I have decided to go for fast unto death which will start exactly after one and a half months” he said. Malik said this one and a half months is the period for government of India to rein in its security forces, whom he alleged of committing gross rights violations. “If situation doesn’t improve then I have no other option but to go for the fast” he said.

Malik also called for a general strike to be observed on Tuesday February 6, 2007, throughout Kashmir against human rights violations. He also plans to hold a protest rally at Kukernag, hometown of recent fake encounter victims on Monday. “Besides I will also go for fast for three consecutive days on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday” he added.

Giving vent to his emotions he said that when I see the condition of people all around the Kashmir, particularly in the rural areas, “I feel like why am I alive to see this”. He said that Kashmir has become a painful story, where four to five people have to die daily to satisfy the greed of Indian security agencies.

“In the recent encounters too it was revealed that Indian security agencies are labeling innocent people as militants and later killing them for getting fat rewards” Malik said.

Lashing out at both the heads of India and Pakistan, Malik said that both of them become adamant on their self interested agenda during talks, but when it comes to speaking for Kashmiris, it is the least considered point for them. “Has the blood of Kashmir become so cheap that it has to flow with out ever stopping” he reiterated.

“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India on May 22 last year promised the zero tolerance of human rights violations, but where actually is that promise on ground” Malik said while citing number of incidents of human rights violations.

Hoping that his fast unto death will bring in some change he said that if I remain mute on the situation then it will be a criminal act on my part. “So as a responsible citizen of Kashmir I will try my level best to safeguard the lives of my people” he said.
