Kashmir moderate’s house attacked, blames hardliners

Srinagar
Jan 15, 2007:

A grenade attack took place outside the residence of Chairman of moderate faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq here today.

The attack took place around 1215 hours, at the Nigeen residence of the moderate leader. No damage was however caused in the attack.

The grenade was lobbed using a rifle and fell in the courtyard of Mirwaiz’s residence, close to a neighbour’s house, sources said.

Mirwaiz Umar is presently on a visit to Jammu, and the family members of Mirwaiz at Srinagar are reportedly safe.

The attack comes as the moderate faction is heading for a visit to Pakistan opposed by rival faction of APHC led by hardliner separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Geelani has called for a general strike against the proposed visit of moderates to Pakistan and their probable talks with New Delhi.

Mirwaiz was addressing a press conference in Jammu, when the attack took place in Srinagar.

Mirwaiz told reporters that he was undeterred by the attack. Copyright KashmirNewz.com.

"I am not frightened nor such attacks would deter me and my team from pursuing the process," he said adding that he knew the people behind the attacks. Content Downloaded from KashmirNewz.com.

“We know their intentions. These are the same very people who want to enforce a general strike on Wednesday by frightening the people.” Mirwaiz told a newspaper in Jammu.

The attack on Mirwaiz’s residence was followed by protests in downtown Srinagar. Protestors pelted stones forcing shops to close and disrupted traffic in the interior city.
