Srinagar
Dec 05, 2006:

Ten students from the University of Kashmir (KU) have been selected for the Ford Foundation International Programme fellowships, KU sources said here. In all 47 students from India have been chosen for the prestigious fellowship.

Some of the Kashmiri students would obtain masters degree while others will pursue their PhDs. KU vice-chancellor Abdul Wahid Qureshi has expressed happiness on the achievement of Kashmiri students.

These students can study in any university in any part of the world for which all expenses will be borne by the Ford Foundation, New York under its International Fellowships Programme (IFP).

Ford Foundation started this programmme for candidates belonging to marginalised and excluded groups and communities like scheduled tribes, other backward classes, religions minorities, women, physically challenged and those with other kinds of socio-economic deprivation, with an aim to build a new generation of social justice leaders worldwide.

Ford fellows come from groups and communities that have little assess to higher education and are selected on the strength of their academic achievements, leadership skills and social commitment to become effective leaders in the struggle to improve lives in the communities, countries and regions.

Congratulating the selected Ford fellows from the university, Qureshi said in coming days more efforts with same zeal for talent search would be made to ensure even more such fellowships come to Kashmiri students and KU would be able to create future leaders for advancing knowledge in natural and social sciences, besides humanities and arts for the overall improvement and development of the Kashmiri society.
