Tourist influx in India grows despite bombings

New Delhi
Dec 01, 2006:

The bomb blasts in Malegaon and Mumbai this year have not affected the tourist influx to India, Minister of Tourism and Culture, Ambika Soni informed the Lok Sabha, lower house of Indian bi-cameral legislature today.

The foreign tourist arrivals to India during January to October 2006 are estimated at 3.41 million up from 3.01 million during the same period in the previous year, registering a growth of 13.1 per cent, the minister said.

From May to October this year, the foreign tourist arrivals are estimated at 1.85 million up from 1.65 million during the same period for the previous year, showing a growth of 12 per cent.

In July this year a series of blasts killed over 200 train commuters in the western suburbs of Mumbai. India blamed Pakistan based groups for carrying out the attack, a charge denied by Islamabad.
