APHC (M) joins the chorus against Kashmir land lease

Srinagar
Nov 20, 2006:

After resentment from the Hardline faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) the moderate faction of the APHC led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also came out today against the proposed land lease to non state subjects at Kashmir's prime tourist resort Gulmarg.

The hardline faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani has already opposed the proposed land lease and has called for a Shutdown strike against the proposal on November 25.

The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet approved sale of 540 kanals of land at Dhobighat in Gulmarg on October 18 to raise tourist infrastructure and promote tourism in the state. The decision has drawn flak from separatist groups, local entrepreneurs, and the opposition National Conference.

A statement issued by the moderate faction of APHC today said the proposed land lease to non-state subjects was "not only unacceptable but also out of the rights of state in view of the disputed nature of the region".

"Even in light of the UN resolutions of 1957 no administration in Jammu and Kashmir has the right to take such steps.

"The decision taken in the name of promoting tourism can have far reaching consequences on future generations in Jammu and Kashmir," the statement said.

Calling the proposal a 'planned auction' APHC(M) said the step can affect the ongoing dialougue process on Jammu and Kashmir'

"APHC would resisit the proposal with full force and will not let any thrust goverment to fiddle with the property rights of Kashmiris," APHC(M) said.

The hardliner faction of APHC which has already come out against the proposal held a seminar on the issue in Srinagar today.

Chairman of the hardline faction of APHC Syed Ali Shah Geelani blamed the mainstream leader in Jammu and Kashmir for aiding New Delhi in their 'occupation tactics'.

Geelani alleged that India wanted to settle non-state subjects in Jammu and Kashmir to ‘reduce the anti-India population to a minority’.

Artcile 370 of the Indian constitution bars non-state subjects of Jammu and Kashmir including Indian citizens to hold property rights in the state.
