Captain, trooper killed in Kashmir gunfight

Srinagar, May 5, 2010:

An Indian Army officer and a trooper were killed in a gunfight with suspected guerrillas in Indian-administered Kashmir Wednesday, Defence officials said.

The gunfight broke out early Wednesday morning in Chattibandi area of Bandipora district, around 60-km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir.

“We have lost an Army officer and a trooper in an ongoing gunfight at Bandipora,” said Lt. Col. J S Brar, the Defence spokesman based in Srinagar.

He said Army had launched an operation to trace militants in the area, when the gunfight broke out.

The area has been cordoned off and reinforcements have been rushed to take on the militants, officials said.
