9 militants killed in Kashmir
Srinagar, August 05, 2009:
Nine insurgents were killed in five separate gun fights with Indian Army in Indian administered Kashmir, defence officials said Wednesday.
While three of the gunfights near the Line of Control, the de facto border between Indian and Pakistan administered parts of Kashmir were still on, the other two in Jammu’s Doda and Poonch areas have concluded.
"Gunfights are on at three different places since Tuesday evening when army tracked the movement of militants close to LoC in Keran sector. Similar gunfights are on in Tangdhar and Parkiagali. So far two militants have been killed in Keran, three in Tangdhar and two in Parkiagali,” said defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar.
Brar claims that army has foiled inflitration bids by insurgents.
The gunfights are on in Kupwara areas, around 130 km northwest of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir.
Meanwhile, two more insurgents have been killed in Jammu.
“During Tuesday night our alert soldiers tracked down a movement on LoC. On challenging them, they opened fire thus triggering a gunfight. Today morning we found the body of a militant. Another operation at Doda was carried out on intelligence inputs where in a commander of Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit was killed during an encounter in Doda,” said defence spokesman Jammu, Lt Col Biplab Nath.
The gunfight between militants and Indian Army troopers in Indian controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently.
On Sunday four militants and an Indian army trooper were killed in similar gunfights in Bungus valley of Kupwara.
According to Indian army the past few days have seen a sprout in violence and infiltration bids in the region.
