Two police killed in Kashmir
August 01, 2009:
Suspected militants shot dead a policeman and a paramilitary trooper in two separate shootouts in Indian-administered Kashmir Saturday, police said. Another paramilitary trooper was injured.
The shootouts took place in crowded Regal Chowk and Batmaloo areas of Srinagar, the summer capital of the region.
“We have lost one jawan (trooper), while as another one was seriously hurt after militants fired upon them at Regal Chowk. The condition of the injured jawan (trooper) in the hospital is critical. In a similar incident a constable of local police was killed at Batmaloo,” said Prabakar Triphati, spokesperson of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Srinagar.
The twin attacks created panic among the shopkeepers and pedestrians, who were seen scurrying for safety.
Though police and paramilitary troopers cordoned off the areas soon after the shootouts, no arrests were made.
So far, no militant group has claimed responsibility of attacks.
