110 ceasefire violations on Kashmir border
New Delhi, July 30, 2009:
India says Pakistan has made 110 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border in Kashmir since 2006.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the bicameral Indian Parliament, defence minister A K Antony said on Monday (July 27) that the 110 incidents include 77 in 2008 alone.
“There has been no casualty to civilians in this firing. However, Indian troops have suffered nine fatal and 25 non-fatal casualties. There are no inputs to corroborate any infiltration attempts during shelling,” the minister said.
Giving a year wise break up the minister informed that three incidents took place in 2006, 21 in 2007, 77 in 2008, and nine in 2009 so far.
The incidents include 44 incidents of trans LoC firing, he said.
The Line of Control, a de facto border, also referred to as a ceasefire line, divides Kashmir between Indian and Pakistan, since 1947.
Both countries claim the region in full, but control parts of it.
New Delhi and Islamabad in 2003 agreed to observe a ceasefire along the international border and LoC in Kashmir.
Before 2003, the sides regularly exchanged heavy artillery fire across the line of control.
Despite occasional violations from the two sides, the ceasefire remains in effect.
