Northern Command gets new head
Srinagar, Tuesday, February 26, 2008:
Indian Army’s Northern Command based in the Udhampur town of Indian administered Kashmir gets a new chief.
General Officer Commanding (GOC), 14 Corps, Lt Gen P C Bhardwaj has been promoted as Army Commander and posted as GOC-in-C of the Northern Command replacing Lt Gen H S Panag who has transferred to the Central Command based in Lucknow.
The new postings will take effect from March 1, 2008.
In a mini war among the Indian Army’s top brass, Lt General Panag had earlier protested his transfer from the most sensitive Northern Command, alleging vested interest behind the move.
Panag also met Defence Minister A K Antony in January this year, appealing him to prevent the proposed transfer.
Panag’s allegations had put him in direct confrontation with Indian Army Chief, General Deepak Kapoor.
Reports quoting defence sources said that Panag had alleged his transfer was being done because he had ordered action into scams and procedural lapses scam that took place during the tenure of Kapoor as GOC Northern Command.
Panag had ordered administrative action against several officers, including a Major General, for 'procedural lapses' in the purchase of tents and related equipment.
Referred to as the ‘tent scam’ the alleged irregularities took place during Kapoor’s tenure in Northern Command.
The Defence Ministry rejected Panag’s plea and called his transfer as routine.
