Pakistan blocks Youtube over blasphemous material
Srinagar, Monday, February 25, 2008:
Pakistan has temporarily blocked access to popular video sharing website, Youtube for carrying blasphemous material considered offensive to Islam.
Reports said that Pakistan officials have told all the Internet Service Providers to block YouTube after an inter-ministerial committee decided to block the website for carrying “blasphemous content, videos and documents,".
Officials said the site had been blocked because it contained controversial sketches of the Prophet Mohammed which were republished by Danish newspapers earlier this month.
Pakistan’s blocking efforts are also believed to be the cause of temporary outage of Youtube in many countries on Sunday.
The cartoons considered offensive by Muslims sparked huge protests across the Islamic world when they first appeared in 2006.
At least 17 Danish newspapers republished the controversial drawing earlier this month, a day after Danish police said they had foiled a plot to murder the cartoonist.
The republishing of cartoons also triggered riots in Denmark.
