Global geoscientists talk oil exploration in Kashmir
Jammu, February 22, 2008:
An international conference on ‘Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential of the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Basins in India, Pakistan and the Middle East’ concluded Thursday at the University of Jammu in Indian administered Kashmir.
The two-day conference organised by the Geology Department of Jammu University in collaboration with Maghreb Petroleum Research Group of University College London and Cambridge University was attended by 120 geoscientists from 16 countries and delegates from 20 oil companies.
The countries included USA, Britain, Australia, Pakistan, Italy, France, Sweden and Libya.
It was the second global conference on the subject in series, the first held in London in 2006 and the next scheduled for November in Tripoli.
The participants laid emphasis on the necessity of exploring new sources of oil and discussed techniques to find out oil yielding rocks.
The participants later met chief minister of Indian administered Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Azad said the deliberations between global geoscientists and multinational exploration companies could lead to new ideas and opportunities of research and exploration in Indian subcontinent.
He expressed hope that the conference would help in opening up new exploration areas in in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier in his message to the conference, Indian Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Kapil Sibal said there was an urgent need to attract researchers and explorationists from academia and industry to focus on topics directly impacting hydrocarbon exploration in the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Basin.
The delegates of the conference will have a two day field visit to Reasi, Patnitop and Ramban areas of Indian administered Kashmir.
