Kashmir separatists to cover untrodden Ladakh

Srinagar, January 19, 2008:

The moderate faction of the Kashmiri separatist alliance All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) is going to set up an office in the cold desert region of Ladakh soon.

Senior separatist Shabir Ahmad Shah, who recently joined the moderate faction of the alliance led by Kashmir's chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said that the amalgam was rethinking its strategy.

Shah said that the alliance was planning to broaden its base and would very soon set up its office in Ladakh.

The APHC has already opened its offices in Hindu dominated Jammu and Mansar, Muslim dominated areas in Jammu region like Poonch, Mendhar, Mandi, Rajouri, Doda and Kishtwar.

"We are also planning to organise a convention of the Hurriyat workers and supporters at Jammu in February," Shah said.

He said that after making Jammu and Ladakh chapters functional, Hurriyat would emerge as a force representing all the regions of the state.

Cut off from the Muslim majority Kashmir Valley by mountains, Ladakh region of Indian administered Kashmir has remained largely untouched by the anti-India insurgency and the separatist movement.

It has a majority Buddhist population mainly in the Leh district while its another district Kargil comprises largely of Shiite Mulsims.

Ladakh has so far remained an untrodden constituency for the Kashmir separatists.
