Pledge to vacate Kashmir schools, hospitals not fulfilled: Mehbooba

Jammu, January 19, 2008:

Ruling ally Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said that New Delhi has not fulfilled its pledge of vacating schools and hospital buildings occupied by Indian troops in Indian administered Kashmir by November 30.

Pro-India politician Mufti said that the decision of New Delhi to get all the school and hospital buildings vacated by troops by November 30 last year was a welcome move, but added the pledge of Government of India had not been implemented fully.

She said that there were reports that some school and hospital buildings at various places across Indian administered Kashmir were still under the occupation of troops.

Stressing the need for fully implementing Indian Defense Minister, A K Antony's pledge in the troops vacation from school and hospital buildings, Mufti said that the move must mark the beginning of a larger process of troop reduction.

She said that while her party's agenda on peace and progress was making incremental but determined progress, India needed to take some more substantial measures to restore people's faith and confidence in the democratic system.
