Congress wins Kashmir bye-election
Jammu, December 15, 2007:
Jahangir Hussain of the ruling Indian National Congress has won the bye-election of Poonch-Haveli assembly constituency of Indian administered Kashmir which went to polls on December 12, 2007, government officials said.
Hussain polled 20,697 votes defeating his nearest rival Yashpal Sharma, an independent candidate by 4,398 votes, officials said.
Sharma secured 16,299 votes.
Opposition National Conference candidate Aijaz Ahmad Jan polled 16,227 votes.
The Poonch-Haveli seat (Assembly segment 87) fell vacant after the death of Aijaz Jan’s father and NC MLA Ghulam Muhammad Jan.
Bharatiya Janta Party candidate Pardeep Sharma got 1957 votes.
Independent candidates Shah Mohammad Tantray polled 7723 votes, Iftikhar Bazmi 912, Janak Singh 514 and Nisar Hussain 1927 votes.
The total of 66,468 votes was polled in the assembly bye-election.
