Farooq Abdullah questions Kashmir’s accession with India

Jammu, November 20, 2007:

Former chief minister of Indian administered Kashmir, and Patron of the National Conference Farooq Abdullah said Monday that killings of innocent Kashmiris by Indian troops makes them question the righteousness of accession with India.

“Such incidents make us think again on the rightness of the decision by our ancestors to accede with India,” Abdullah said.

The instrument of accession, joining Jammu and Kashmir with Indian Union is said to be been signed by the Dogra ruler of the state in 1947, after the independence of the subcontinent and subsequent partition into two nations, India and Pakistan.

The accession was supported by Abdullah’s father, Shiekh Muhammad Abdullah, the first prime minister of Indian administered Kashmir.

He said the Indian defence ministry and the state government should ensure punichemnts to troops involved in killing innocent people.

A baker, Reyaz Ahmad Sofi, was killed by Indian Army in Damhal Hanjipora village of south Kashmir on Saturday.

While army said Sofi was killed in crossfire, the civil administration hinted that he may have been used as a human shield by the troops.
