Withdraw troops, revoke draconian laws: Kashmir leader

Muzaffarabad, October 22, 2007:

Kashmir’s major separatist alliance All Parties Hurriyat Conference’s Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) Chapter has urged New Delhi to fulfill the popular demand of troop withdrawal from the region and revoke draconian laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the Disturbed Areas Act.

In a statement, Rehmani said that these laws give sweeping powers to Indian army to perpetrate “state terrorism” of the highest magnitude on the people in the region.

He also condemned the killing of a school teacher, humiliation of female teachers and students and indiscriminate firing on protesting demonstrators in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Rehmani also protested against the fresh curbs on the hardline APHC chairman Syed Ali Geelani by police to prevent him from proceeding to Kupwara.

He said the presence of army was “mother of all terrorism in Kashmir”.

Rehmani also urged people to observe October 27 as a Black Day and said that the Hurriyat leaders would hold sit-in demonstrations before the UNMOGIP office at Rawalpindi to demand military pull out from Indian administered Kashmir.
