Grand Mufti warns Kashmir CM

Srinagar, October 06, 2007: The Grand Mufti of Indian administered Kashmir Mufti Bashir-ud-Din has asked the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to atone for his remark about Islam he made during the state celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi earlier this week.

Otherwise, he warned, the act will be considered an open transgression against Islam.

A statement of the office of the Central Dar-ul-Futwa (Supreme Court of Islamic Sharia) Jammu Kashmir issued here Saturday quoted the Grand Mufti as saying that the chief minister should seek atonement for his Gandhi remark or the statement would be considered anti-Islam.

Speaking at the birth anniversary celebrations of Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, who won freedom for the undivided India from the British, organised by the state government, Azad had said that while Islam secures the hereafter, Gandhian philosophy of truth and non-violence was apt for success in the contemporary world.

Mufti Bashir said that Islam was a complete way of life. "To Muslims throughout the world Prophet Muhammad is the supreme role model," he said in the statement.

Azadís remarks also drew flak from the separatists in the region.

The hardline All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Thursday accused Azad of blasphemy.
