Geelani accuses Kashmir CM of blasphemy

Srinagar, October 04, 2007:

Chairman of the hardline faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has accused chief minister of Indian administered Kashmir of blasphemy for his remarks about Islam and Gandhiism this week.

While speaking at the birthday celebrations of India’s father of the nation, Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Islam secured one’s hereafter while as Gadhiism was good for worldly affairs.

Reacting to the statement Geelani said that Azad was among the likes of Salman Rushdie and Tasleema Nasreen, the writers accused of blasphemy by Muslims.

The hyped celebrations of Gandhi’s birthday had already came under criticism from separatist groups in Kashmir, who smelled a conspiracy in the elaborate celebrations involving school children in Kashmir.
