Atomic Research Centre in Kashmir attacked

Srinagar, July 26, 2007:

Two suspected guerillas were killed in Indian administered Kashmir when they tried to attack the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Srinagar here today, police said.

At least six paramilitary troopers were injured in the two-hour gunfight between the guerillas and the troopers guarding the complex.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, S M Sahai said the two armed guerillas tried to sneak into the centre from the rear side, attacking the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post housed inside, with grenades and indiscriminate firing.

In the ensuing gunfight the two guerillas were killed and six troopers were injured. The injured troopers were removed to a local hospital.

No damage has been reported to the atomic research centre. The attack took place at 10 a.m. when the employees were arriving at the centre.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Kashmir is located at Zakura, 14 kilometers from the city centre in Srinagar. It is the first such attack on the centre since anti-India insurgency broke out in the region in 1989.

The federally owned research centre is one of the highly guarded complex in the state due to its sensitive nature.

Prior to insurgency the centre was the hub of atomic research activities in the state, and much of its work was either moved out or abandoned after 1989. Currently the centre is limited to research activities in the field of radiations.

The identity of the killed guerillas was being ascertained. Police and CRPF have launched a search operation in the area .
