China occupies 38000 sq km of Kashmir

Srinagar, May 09: China is in illegal occupation of approximately 38,000 square kilometres of Jammu and Kashmir, including 5,180 square kilometres ceded by Pakistan to China under the Sino-Pakistan Boundary Agreement of 1963, Indian External Affairs minister, Pranab Mukherjee told the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian bi-cameral parliament today.
Jammu and Kashmir is claimed in full by India and Pakistan, and is largey occupied by the two neighbours, while a portion is also occupied by China.
The Home minister added that China also illegally claims approximately 90,000 square kilometres of Indian territory in the State of Arunachal Pradesh, and about 2000 square kilometres in the Middle Sector. The Government have conveyed to the Chinese side that "Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh integral parts of India" Mukherjee informed.
India and China are engaged in discussions to arrive mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question. The ninth and tenth rounds of talks between the Special Representatives of India and China were held in India from 16-18 January 2007 and from April 20-22, 2007.
The two Special Representatives continued their discussions on a framework for the boundary settlement on the basis of the Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles signed on 11 April 2005.
Both sides agreed to hold the next (eleventh) round of talks at a mutually convenient time, which will be decided through diplomatic channels, Mukerjee added.
