Mehbooba asks Karnataka CM to release Kashmiri students
Jammu
April 05, 2007 (Kashmir Newz Desk) :
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and Member of Parliament, Mehbooba Mufti Thursday spoke to Karnataka Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy expressing deep concern over the arrest of Kashmiri boys studying in various professional colleges of Bangalore.
Around 28 Kashmiri boys were arrested after reports of clashes between two groups of students.
The parents of these students on Wednesday alleged the Bangalore Police of partisan role for arresting Kashmiris and letting off the students of the other group.
Kumaraswamy assured Mufti that he would personally look into the matter not only as the Chief Minister, but also because the Ghousia College of Engineering where the incident has taken place falls in his constituency.
He said the Karnataka Director General of Police would be immediately directed to personally look into the matter and ensure that no Kashmiri student is put to any trouble unnecessarily and the matter is resolved amicably.
Peoples Democratic Party has time and again assured people in the Valley that they had talked to New Delhi to inform the state police whenever the arrests of Kashmiris studying or doing business in different Indian states are to be conducted.
Kumaraswamy said the matter would be taken care of and assured Mufti that the Karnataka government would ensure the safety and security of all the Kashmiri students present in his state and every effort would be made so that no such incidents recur in future.
Earlier, Mufti told Kumaraswamy that the detention of the Kashmiri students has created panic and anguish in the State especially among the families whose wards are studying in different colleges of Karnataka.
She said despite repeated reminders by the State government, harassment of Kashmiri students continues in different parts of the country which was an unfortunate trend.
Mufti said as most of the Kashmiri students are studying in Karnataka, such adverse incidents would discourage them not only from continuing their studies but would also send a very wrong message among the Kashmiri youth who have to time and again face the brunt for belonging to a place like Jammu & Kashmir.
