Kashmir insurgency turning deadlier
Srinagar
March 15, 2007 (Kashmir Newz Desk) :---
The insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir may have gone down but its impact has become deadlier.
According to top defence sources in Jammu and Kashmir, the ratio of the troopers killed to militants killed has gone up from 1:9 in the nineties to 1:4 in the first six years of the twenty-first century.
"For every nine militants killed, we used to loose one solider during the nineties. Now the situation has got worse for us. Now we are loosing our solider to only four militants," a top defence official wishing not to be named said.
The combat operations in Kashmir have become deadlier with the militants rethinking their strategies.
After a crackdown by the Pakistan President Parvez Musharaf on the militant camps operating across the ceasefire line, which divides the state between India and Pakistan, the infiltration from across has gone down considerably.
This has made militant organisations operating in the state rethink their strategies. They no longer want to loose their men as the recruitment in the ranks has diminished notably. The attacks no longer are carried helter-skelter. Cross firing and grenade attacks are giving way to Fidayeen attacks in which the militants strike at the place where the possibilities of the casualties of troops are
more.
"The militant organisations now are doing a lot of study before carrying the attacks," the officer said.
"By terming militants a frustrated lot, we are doing a disservice to the nation. These people may be fanatics but they precisely plan. We've to be a step ahead of them in our planning and intelligence.
"No counterinsurgency can be soft. It has its hard edges. But we too
have to plan meticulously," he said.
According to the J&K government the number of militants killed in 1992
were 819 and the attempts of the infiltration from across the ceasefire line were 345. In 1995, the militants killed were 332 while the infiltration bids were 3,200. In 1999, 1082 militants were killed while attempts of infiltration were 3,050. In 2001, the number of militants killed rose up to 2,020 while the infiltration bids also
rose up alarmingly to 8,545. However, afterwards, the graph shows decline in the number of militants killed as well as the infiltration bids.
According to the government statistics, the militants killed in 2003 were 1,484 while the infiltration bids fell down to 1,330. In 2004, militants killed were 976 while the infiltration bids were 516. The corresponding year 2005, 917 militants were killed while the infiltration bids lowered to 231 and last year the militants killed were 593 while the infiltration bids were 573.
