Kashmir lifeline link unlikely to open soon
Srinagar
Feb 24, 2007 (Kashmir Newz Desk):
The Srinagar Jammu National Highway was closed for the fourth day today with around a 1000 vehicles stranded at many places along the road.
The road closed due to landslides at Pantihal is unlikely open soon as the Border Road Organisation (BRO) has gone for a major reconstruction programme.
Official sources today disclosed that the road will remain closed for the next three days, and the decision to reopen the highway will be reviewed Tuesday.
BRO sources say a 30 metre stretch of the highway has completely been washed out due to the landslides at Pantihal and it would not be possible for them to immediately reopen the highway.
Sources say the Border Road Organisation is engaged in major blasting of the hillocks, near Pantihal for reconstruction of the road.
Shooting stones near Pantihal have blocked the Highway frequently in the last year.
Srinagar-Jammu Highway is the only road link to Kashmir Valley and its lifeline as all the supplies of food and essential commodites reach the region through this road.
