Nomination papers of 9 Kashmir LC candidates accepted

The nomination papers of nine candidates for the Legislative Council have been accepted after the scrutiny of papers held at Assembly Complex here today, Returning Officer M Iqbal Ganani said.

Ganai is the Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and has been desiganted as the Returning Officer for elections to eight Council seats which fell vacant last week.

In all 13 candidates had filed their nomination papers which included four members from Congress, two from People Democratic Party, three from National Conference and four independent candidates.

The papers of nine candidates have been found in order and nomination papers of four independents were rejected by the Returning Officer for not being complete in all respects.

Nomination papers of Mohammad Sharief Niaz, Mohammad Amin Bhat, Ali Mohammad Bhat, R.S.Chib of Congress. Murtaza Khan, Nizam-ud-Din Khatana of PDP and Devinder Singh Rana, M.Y.Taing, Nasir Khan of National Conference have been found correct and as such accepted, an official spokesman said.

The nomination papers of Independent candidates Fayaz Ahmed Ganai, Om Parkash Talwar Advocate, Haji Mohammad Din and Dr Hasrat Hussain have been rejected "due to non-fulfilling of required formalities".

The last date of withdrawal of papers and elections is February 24. The elections, if necessary would be held on March 5, 2007.
